Oscar Nominations announced

The 2007 Oscar nominations were announced this morning in
Los Angeles. DreamGirls emerged with the most nominations, receving eight Oscar nods.

However, only two of DreamGirls‘ nominations were in the major categories, for Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson in the supporting actor and actress categories respectively. Three of its nominations were in the same category, best original song.

Babel was the second highest nominated, earning seven in total, five of which were in the major categories. The golden-globe winning flick could be a strong bet for best picture, but who knows with such stiff competition in that category from The Departed, Little Miss Sunshine, Letters from Iwo Jima and The Queen.

Thankfully, the wonderful indie flick Little Miss Sunshine was duly acknowledged by the Academy, picking up four nominations in all major categories, including a best supporting actor nomination for the brilliant Alan Arkin, his first since 1968.

There were no real surprises this year, except that DreamGirls lost out on the Best Picture and Best Director nominations, which it was hotly tipped to receive.

Nothing seems to be a safe bet on the list, so who knows how it might turn out. Not even Helen Mirren looks that safe anymore now that she’s up against Meryl Streep and Judi Dench.

The 79th Annual Oscar Awards ceremony will take on the 25th February at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. We won’t be there, because we’re too cool for these kind of things. Unless anyone has any spare tickets.

Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004)

Bill:Pai Mei taught you the five point palm-exploding heart technique?
The Bride:Of course he did.
Bill:Why didn't you tell me?
The Bride:I don't know... because I'm a bad person.
Bill:No. You're not a bad person. You're a terrific person. You're my favorite person, but every once in a while, you can be a real cunt.
