The Deported

The Chinese film censor board has refused to permit Martin Scorsese’s The Departed to be shown in China, a government source stated yesterday. The decision is due to the film’s mention of a Chinese plot to buy military hardware.

“There is no chance The Departed will be shown in mainland cinemas,” the government source said. “This is because the U.S. side declined to change a plot describing how Beijing wanted to buy advanced military computer hardware. That part of the plot is definitely unnecessary.”

An executive in Hong Kong at Media Asia, which has the distribution rights for the film in the mainland confirmed that the film did not pass the Chinese censor, but declined further comment.

The irony is that The Departed is a western remake of a brilliant Chinese film, Infernal Affairs. Perhaps Scorcese intended the scene in question as a tribute to the Hong Kong underworld that featured in the original, or perhaps it was just an innocent mistake.

Either way, the pint-sized director is probably too busy celebrating with his shiny new globe to care too much about who’s seeing his film on the other side of the world.

For anyone who isn’t in China, look below for the trailer.

Bill:Pai Mei taught you the five point palm-exploding heart technique?
The Bride:Of course he did.
Bill:Why didn't you tell me?
The Bride:I don't know... because I'm a bad person.
Bill:No. You're not a bad person. You're a terrific person. You're my favorite person, but every once in a while, you can be a real cunt.
