British royal drama The Queen is the front contender for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTA), which will be held on the 17th February.

The BAFTA nominations were announced this week, joining the abundance of award nominations announced in the last month.

Stephen Frears’ The Queen leads the pack this year, picking up ten nominations, including Best Film, Best Original Screenplay and a Best Actress nomination for Helen Mirren

Surprisingly, Casino Royale was just behind Her Royal Majesty, receiving nine nominations, including a Best Actor nomination for Daniel Craig. This marks the first time an actor playing the famous spy has received a BAFTA nomination. Impressive, to say the least.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth picked up eight nominations, Babel received seven, while The Departed, United 93 and Little Miss Sunshine picked up six each.   Surprisingly, Oscar favourite DreamGirls was almost entirely overlooked by the awards, only receiving nominations for Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Hudson and Achievement in Film Music.   Another overlooked candidate was Children of Men, which only got three nominations for cinematography, production design and special effects, a disappointing haul for such an incredible film.    Overall, the Brits seem to have fairly acknowledged the best films of the year. Despite a bit of a leniency towards that spy fella.

I swear, the Queen was the worst film I saw last year! What is all the fuss about? It was like a stupid ITV drama and the production values were the same!

Quote of the Day

Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004)

Bill:Pai Mei taught you the five point palm-exploding heart technique?
The Bride:Of course he did.
Bill:Why didn't you tell me?
The Bride:I don't know... because I'm a bad person.
Bill:No. You're not a bad person. You're a terrific person. You're my favorite person, but every once in a while, you can be a real cunt.
