Depp to make Litvinenko film

Warner Bros. have bought the film rights to the story of poisoned Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko. The studio has given the project to Johnny Depp’s production company to develop.

The film will be based on the currently unpublished book, “Sasha’s Story: The Life and Death of a Russian Spy,” to be written by New York Times London bureau chief Alan Cowell, who covered the former spy’s death.

The book will address Litvinenko’s life and poisoning aswell as investigating the claims that he was assassinated by his government.

Depp will produce the film with his production company, Infinitum Nihil and could also potentially star in the project, Variety reports

Investigations continue into the death of Litvinenko in London in November. The former spy’s body contained a deadly dose of radioactive polonium-210. Friends of Mr Litvinenko believe he was poisoned by the Russian government due to his strong criticism of President Vladimir Putin.

The story is certainly one of the most intriguing cases of post Cold-war subterfuge and politics, but it seems slightly insensitive to be planning a book and a film of this man’s ordeal less than two months after his death. Perhaps Warner Bros. simply want to do justice to Litvinenko’s memory by telling his story to the world. Whilst pocketing a few million dollars in the process.

Cowell’s book will be published later this year, leaving the film open for a possible 2008 release date.

Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004)

Bill:Pai Mei taught you the five point palm-exploding heart technique?
The Bride:Of course he did.
Bill:Why didn't you tell me?
The Bride:I don't know... because I'm a bad person.
Bill:No. You're not a bad person. You're a terrific person. You're my favorite person, but every once in a while, you can be a real cunt.
