Popcorn’s worth eating again

James Cameron will begin shooting his new film, Avatar in April this year. Cameron has had an unwelcome hiatus from movie-making since 1997’s Titanic.

For anyone who might not know, Cameron is the genius behind the two good Terminator films, Aliens, True Lies and of course, that one about the boat. His extreme budgetary liberties and “more is more” style of film-making always ensure the biggest and the best popcorn entertainment and his comeback is long overdue. Basically, he makes the films that Michael Bay dreams of making.

Avatar is described as an enormous science-fiction epic, which Cameron is more than capable of pulling off. It’s the story of a wounded ex-marine, sent to exploit a faraway planet’s resources, who decides that this is immoral and leads the planet’s inhabitants to a probable victory. “The story is both epic and emotional,” Cameron stated in a press release. “This one’s going to be a grand adventure.”

Unknown Sam Worthington will play the ex-marine, while similarly unfamiliar Zoe Saldana will play the alien love interest.

The film boasts new image-based performance software, which allows Cameron to see the CG environments of the film in real-time as the actors perform. This allows for a much more controlled directorial approach and will hopefully make dodgy CG background acting a thing of the past. If only George Lucas had thought of this.

“We’re creating an entire world, a complete ecosystem of phantasmagorical plants and creatures, and a native people with a rich culture and language,” Cameron said. “For me, as a lifelong fan of science-fiction and action, Avatar is a dream project.” We have no idea what phantasmagorical means, but it sounds expensive.

The film will be shot entirely in 3-D, but Cameron is confident that by its release in 2009, cinemas will be adequately equipped to show this epic production. For fans of science-fiction or just big, triumphant movies, this is definitely something to get excited about.

Quote of the Day

Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004)

Bill:Pai Mei taught you the five point palm-exploding heart technique?
The Bride:Of course he did.
Bill:Why didn't you tell me?
The Bride:I don't know... because I'm a bad person.
Bill:No. You're not a bad person. You're a terrific person. You're my favorite person, but every once in a while, you can be a real cunt.
