Award-worthy Tentacles

Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest is the forerunner in the nominations for the Visual Effects Society Awards, it was announced yesterday.

Disney’s blockbuster sequel received six nominations, including “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Motion Picture” and “Best Single Visual Effect of the Year.”

Overlooked by other awards ceremonies and received tepidly by critics, Captain Sparrow’s cinematic return was nonetheless an overwhelming success at the box office, earning over one billion dollars worldwide. The film has since become the fastest-selling DVD ever. Captain Jack and his acting-light co-stars should clean up at the effects awards, judging by the incredibly realistically tentacled Davy Jones alone, who has been nominated for “Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Motion Picture.”

Other films nominated included Children of Men and X-Men: The Last Stand for “Best Single Visual Effect of the Year”, Casino Royale and Superman Returns for “Outstanding Special Effects in a Motion Picture” and The Fountain and Charlotte’s Web, both ignored on the Oscars list, for “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Drive Motion Picture.” It’ll be an impressive feat in itself if they manage to fit these catchy titles onto the award statues.

The Visual Effects Society Awards are often overshadowed by the sheer mass of awards ceremonies that take place in the New Year, and are sometimes snobbishly disregarded by pretentious film “connoisseurs.” But whether you welcome or shun the visual effects revolution, it is hard to ignore the impact that these techno-geeks and their “computer graphics” have made to the film industry, ever since that Jar Jar Binks first popped his irritating head onto our screens.

Quote of the Day

Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004)

Bill:Pai Mei taught you the five point palm-exploding heart technique?
The Bride:Of course he did.
Bill:Why didn't you tell me?
The Bride:I don't know... because I'm a bad person.
Bill:No. You're not a bad person. You're a terrific person. You're my favorite person, but every once in a while, you can be a real cunt.
