The Subtle Pen

Hossein Amini has been named as screenwriter for the film adaptation of The Subtle Knife, the second instalment of the His Dark Materials Trilogy. The first film, The Golden Compass, is half way through production and is set to be released for Christmas 2007.

New Line Cinema confirmed that the Iranian-born Amini is their choice to adapt the second part of the acclaimed fantasy trilogy, written by Philip Pullman. Amini is currently working on Drive, starring Hugh Jackman and is renowned for writing the critically acclaimed Wings of the Dove and the excellent The Four Feathers.

The second book departs slightly from the characters of the first to introduce the 12 year-old Will, who meets Lyra Belacqua, the heroine of the first film. As yet, it is unconfirmed whether the stars of the first film, including Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, will appear in the second.

Officially, neither The Subtle Knife, nor the third book, The Amber Spyglass have been greenlit for production, as the studio are waiting to gauge the reaction from the first film. And of course, the profits.

However, Pullman’s novels are so utterly engaging and readable that it would be hard for these films not to do justice to their source material. And with the committed Chris Weitz at the helm and the impressive cast-list, it would be hard for these amazing novels to bomb at the big-screen. But New Line have evidently shown their confidence in the success of the franchise by already hiring the Oscar-nominated Amiri to pen the sequel.

Hopefully, The Golden Compass can fill that Christmas movie gap that’s been so sorely felt since the Lord of the Rings trilogy ended. It should be a welcome change from recent Christmas pap like Christmas with the Kranks and Deck the Halls.

Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004)

Bill:Pai Mei taught you the five point palm-exploding heart technique?
The Bride:Of course he did.
Bill:Why didn't you tell me?
The Bride:I don't know... because I'm a bad person.
Bill:No. You're not a bad person. You're a terrific person. You're my favorite person, but every once in a while, you can be a real cunt.
