Little Miss Nominated

Quirky comedy Little Miss Sunshine was announced as the leading contender for the Independent Spirit Awards this evening. The film has been nominated for five awards including Best Feature, Best Director and Best First Screenplay.

Little Miss Sunshine is wonderfully original, heartwarming and hilarious and was easily one of the best films of the year. It centres on the misadventures of the dysfunctional Hoover family as they journey to
California in order to reach the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant.

A gay, suicidal Steve Carroll, an overbearing, failing Greg Kinnear and a porn-obsessed drug-guzzling Alan Arkin are just three of the reasons to see this film. Three other reasons are the silence-vowed Paul Dano, overstressed Toni Collette and young Abigail Breslin, who easily rivals her more experienced acting colleagues. Little Miss Sunshine’s emotion-jerkingingly funny script and wonderful range of characters make it a possible contender for film of the year and a safe bet for several Spirit Awards.

Drugs drama Half Nelson also received five nominations and director Robert Altman, who died last week, was nominated for Best Director for “A Prairie Home Companion”. The Independent Spirit awards acknowledge independent and low-budget films that are mostly overlooked by the Oscars. However, Brokeback Mountain and Crash, both Independent Spirit winners were received very well in the 2006 Oscars.

The Awards are due to be held on 24 February 2007, the day before the Oscars.

Quote of the Day

Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004)

Bill:Pai Mei taught you the five point palm-exploding heart technique?
The Bride:Of course he did.
Bill:Why didn't you tell me?
The Bride:I don't know... because I'm a bad person.
Bill:No. You're not a bad person. You're a terrific person. You're my favorite person, but every once in a while, you can be a real cunt.
